Valmont® Spun Concrete Poles

Valmont® Utility poles stand as a testament to the value of spun concrete. But the power of spun concrete poles isn’t just in their ability to resist extreme elements. Lower prices, simple installation, virtually no maintenance concerns and line sizes up to 345 kV (single or double circuit) make spun concrete a nearly perfect pole material. Backed by decades of industry-leading engineering, manufacturing and service expertise, spun concrete poles from Valmont® Utility might just be the perfect pole for you to set…and forget.

Water, salt, coastal air, fog, mist, erosion, high winds, hot or corrosive soils, swampy environments and fire are just a few of the conditions that wreak havoc on most transmission poles—but not spun concrete. It stands up to nearly any conditions—including cold weather. When spinning and pre-stressing are combined, you get concrete poles with the highest density, lowest weight and best strength-to-weight ratio available.

Valmont’s attention to design and manufacturing details, matched with the inherent benefits of concrete, are helping utilities around the world discover the undisputed value of spun concrete poles. With spun concrete poles from Valmont® Utility, you get:

  • Unsurpassed Durability—With virtually no degradation in even the most severe environments, you can expect your spun concrete poles to enhance the longevity of the power delivery line.

  • Strength from Centrifugal Casting—The controlled spinning compacts and increases the already substantial strength of concrete. Pre-stressed strands significantly increase strength and cracking resistance, providing ultimate moment capacities far beyond those found in non-pre-stressed, static-cast alternatives.

  • Low Lifetime Costs—Direct burial is used extensively, significantly reducing installation costs. There is no rusting or rotting to monitor, replacements and patches are not needed.

  • Patented Splice Joints—They allow Valmont to offer spun concrete poles over 200 feet in height, providing easier installation between pole sections than traditional flange splices.

STRONG AND FLEXIBLE

While spun concrete from Valmont® Utility is among the strongest man can make, the capacity to carry loads up to 345 kV on either a double or single circuit is only the beginning of the flexibility that it offers:

  • Lower price — In addition to being a cost-efficient and stable material, spun concrete poles don’t require base plates, anchor bolts, ground sleeves, or pole treatments (galvanizing).

  • Short lead time — Pre-engineering and readily available concrete means custom-engineered poles can deliver in as little as 8 weeks.

  • Durable — Spun concrete stands up to nearly all environmental conditions, even when they’re at their extreme.

  • Cost-effective foundations and installation — Drill and set the same day with the convenience of direct burial.

  • Virtually maintenance free — No rusting, rotting, degradation or patches.

  • Color — Spun concrete poles can be colored to match the aesthetics of the environment.

  • Confidence — Valmont® Utility is a global leader in concrete pole research and development, using their own full-scale testing facility.

BETTER MATERIALS & MANUFACTURING

High strength prestressed steel strands are wrapped with spiral wire and locked into tension plates at each end of the mold.

The specially formulated, high-strength concrete is placed into the mold.

The mold is bolted closed, the strand is prestressed, and the mold is spun at a high rate. The centrifugal force generated from spinning compresses the concrete against the mold.

The finished pole has a hollow center. This provides a lower weight and an outstanding strength-to-weight ratio.

STRONG UNDER PRESSURE

Valmont® Utility spun concrete poles stand up to extreme winds and flooding. That’s because prestressed strands significantly increase strength and resistance to cracking, providing ultimate moment capacities far beyond those found in non-prestressed, static-cast alternatives.
