One of our valued customers, Rising Edge just recently installed some large equipment at Whitla-Shamrock Windfarm, AB, which was supplied by our partners:

  • 2 large QVARx capacitor banks 34.5kV/18 MVAr each,

  • equipped with Southern States CapSwitchers®

We are very excited to see it all in action, please click the thumbnails for a closer look!

The Whitla Wind Project is a nominal 300 megawatt (“MW”) wind power facility that Capital Power is developing in two phases. The project is located approximately 15 kilometres south of Bow Island in the County of Forty Mile, Alberta on approximately 33,000 acres of land. Phase 1 of the Project consists of a 201.6 MW facility, with 56 turbine sites. In December 2017, Capital Power was awarded a contract for Phase 1 under Alberta’s Renewable Electricity Program (“REP 1”). Phase 2 will be approximately 97.2 MW. Construction costs for Phase 1 are expected to be between $315 and $325 million.

Quick Facts

  • Phase 1 of the project is comprised of 56 Vestas V136 – 3.6 MW wind turbines with a hub height of 105 metres and blade rotor diameter of 136 metres

  • Phase 1 of the project was selected in December 2017, by the Alberta Electric System Operator, in the first round of the Renewable Electricity Program

  • Project has the potential to generate enough electricity to power 67,000 Alberta homes annually (based on average household energy consumption of 12,000 kWh per year)

The contractors involved with the project

  • Vestas - was awarded the contract for the supply of the V136-3.45MW turbines for the project. Its contractual scope also includes a ten-year Active Output Management 5000 (AOM 5000) service agreement, in addition to the supply and commissioning of the turbines.

  • Stantec Consulting conducted the environmental evaluation works of the wind project.

  • Rising Edge Group designed the collector system and is also constructing the substation.

Rising Edge Group is a high voltage electrical contractor providing safe, cost-effective, and fit-for-purpose project solutions to the power industry. Since our inception in 2002, Rising Edge has grown to provide a wide array of services in the power, transmission, distribution, industrial, and renewables sectors, unlike anyone else. From conceptual design to commissioning, each aspect of your project is handled by trained industry specialists resulting in a product that is complete, on-time, and on-budget.

QVARx capacitor banks

—Anyone can build a capacitor bank, but only QVARx can build an arc-resistant one.—

A capacitor bank is a group of several capacitors of the same rating that are connected in series or parallel with each other to store electrical energy . The resulting bank is then used to counteract or correct a power factor lag or phase shift in an alternating current power supply.

The QVARx team is proud to offer its products of professional design and quality. The products are designed and manufactured at their factory in St-Jerome, about 30 mins from the Montreal airport.QVARx Inc, an industry leader in the design and manufacturing of mid to high voltage capacitor and harmonic filter systems. Their arc-resistant metal enclosed capacitor product line offers the ultimate in safety to industry and utilities.

Advantages

  • No upper voltage limits

  • Lower purchase cost than metal enclosed.

  • Lower installed cost for large MVAR (30 MVAR and up)

Southern States capswitchers

Southern States is the largest switch manufacturer of high voltage disconnect switches in the world, their products are engineered to the highest technical standards and manufactured from the finest raw materials by craftsmen who share the same commitment to quality and dedication to detail that has been the cornerstone of Southern States since their inception way back in 1916.

Southern States Capswitchers are the only special purpose capacitor switching devices in the industry, and the only capacitor switching devices which were designed from their inception to handle the rigors of capacitor switching duty as they are not adapted technology like all other manufacturers’ solutions for capacitor switching.

CapSwitcher® - Purpose built capacitor switching device advantages:

  • Closing resistors for mitigation of voltage and current transients

  • Resistor sizes to allow optimization for best results

  • Simple, cost effective, mechanical design that provides repeatability

  • Long Life (10,000 operations)

  • Eliminates need for inrush reactors

  • Interrupting capability on most designs

  • Fault close ratings on all designs

  • Making and breaking the circuit in SF6

  • Design virtually eliminates restrikes

  • Can be supplied with current monitoring
